What is a Computer Network?

Now network are categorized on the basis of their size such as general-purpose networks LAN MAN and WAN you probably heard about them already some other type of networks which are categorized on their purpose those are called special-purpose networks.

LAN (Local Area Network)

The Local Area Network is a network which is designed to operate over a small physical area such as an office, factory or a group of building.

In a LAN, one computer can become a server serving all the remaining computers called clients.

• Work Station 
• File servers
• Gateway
• Network interfacing unit
• Hubs
• Communication channels

Advantages of LAN

• High reliability
• Adding workstation is easy.
• Sharing of Peripherals devices like printers is easy.

Applications of LAN

• File transfer and file access.
• Personal computing.
• Documents distribution.

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

• A MAN is basically a bigger version of LAN and normally uses similar technology.

• It is designed to extend over a large area such as an entire city.

they use their own network this type of network is known as Metropolitan Area Network which is not connected to the outer internet As you can see the world Map, A lot of networks are interconnected and you probably surf them using these This is known as internet Wide area Network that means a lot of networks are connected with each other and are known as wide area network.

WAN (Wide Area Network)

• when a network spans a large distance or when the computer to be connected to each other are at a widely separated location a WAN can't be used.

• For such situations, a WAN must be installed.

• The Communication channel is telephone lines or satellite links.

There are some special purpose networks, such as Storage Area Network (SAN) storage area networks are used between the various storage devices without connecting to the local area network another are Enterprise Private Networks it is a companies network which is used to connect the regional offices to the head offices. it is more secure and not necessary connected to the outer internet and this is virtual private network these are the private networks which goes through the internet but these are encrypted, and more secure
